Water Testing
Ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for every student and staff member is a top priority at Horseheads Central School District. As part of that commitment, we follow all New York State regulations regarding water quality in our schools.
In 2016, New York State instituted mandatory lead testing of water outlets (for example faucet, water fountains, bottle fillers, and cup filler). At the time, schools were required to test every five years, and any outlets with lead levels above 15 parts per billion (ppb) had to be addressed. Horseheads Central School District has consistently followed these safety protocols and conducted regular testing to maintain compliance.
In 2022, the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulations on lead testing were updated to further strengthen student and staff protection. These updates included increasing testing frequency from every five years to every three years and lowering the lead level to 5 ppb, well below the national EPA standard of 15 ppb to which municipalities use.
The district is following all New York State Department of Health guidelines for both notification and correction of any identified concerns. All sources of elevated levels at any of our schools will be identified, marked, and taken out of service in anticipation of immediate repair or replacement of any identified fixture. Parents at any school whose result shows elevated levels will be notified.
We will also post testing results here as they become available. If you have questions, please contact the Superintendent's Office at (607) 739-5601, x4201, or email hcsdinfo@horseheadsdistrict.com.
